Bhai Phonta , Bhatri Dwitiya

Vai Phonta / Bhatri Dwitiya vidhi

Origin of Bhai phonta:

Now, I am a firm believer that before doing anything one should know the origin of the ritual why it was necessary etc. So story behind Bhaiphonta is, Yamraj on this day went to visit his sister Yami's (Yamuna) house, upon seeing her brother Ellited Yamuna welcomed Yama with boron dala (aarati), applied phonta ( tilak) on his forehead and offered him sweets. Yama became so happy and impressed with this gesture of Yamuna that he also showerd her with lots of love and gifts. And blessed her by declaring that any brother who would recieve boron, phonta/tilak from his sister on this day should never be afraid of death.

As the article progresses, you will know how the items / ingredients are choosen in boron dala which symbolizes long life for the brother.

Time : Generally the occasion of Bhai phonta is celebrated on the month of kartik when Amabasya ends and Pratipad starts. It is celebrated in both the days of Pratipad and Dwitiya. This entirely depends on your family rituals and traditions.

In the year of 2020, Bhaiphonta falls on 15th Nov ( pratipad) and 16th Nov (Dwitiya).

Preparation You need below things to do the rituals. -

i) Boron dala / Kulo / Thali - Required to keep below items and do boron / aarti for your brother.

ii) kajal (natural made with ghee) - Take belpata, spread good amount of ghee on top and put the side with ghee on top of pradeep's flame.the ghee will burn and gives you the purest form of home made kajal.

iii) Sada Chondon, Lal chondon - We need to have these 2 types of chandan ( sandalwood) mixture with water.

iv) one object made by iron - This symbolizes to  protect our brother from death with iron.

v)  one object made by stone. - This symbolizes to protect our brothers from death with stone.

vi) Dried jute leaves - Since jute leaves are bitter in taste, its the symbol that this keeps the death away.

vii) early morning due drop  - This symbolizes purest form of blessings.

Viii) Taler ati ( palm fruit) - Tal tree takes longer time to get Tal fruits. The elders used to give blessing like - "Tal bune Tal kheyo". So Taal er ati is given to denote longer life for the brother.

ix) Dhan, Durbo - Dhan and durbo is given as blessings . Dhan denotes growth, labh and Durbo 3 blades denotes brahma, vishnu and Maheswar.Scientifically Durbo grass has cooling property which helps someone to calm down.Durbo is also lord Ganesh's favourite grass.Ther is an interesting story of why Durbo is Ganesha's favourite.Comment below to know more.

x) Pradeep - Pradeep is a necessary when it comes to any Hindu rituals. It denotes hope and energy. Also in hindu culture we always do good rituals or puja with presence of Agni. Agni has a purifying effect on the environemnt. It destroys the darkness and gives us light.
